The Evolution of STAR Financial Bank

1940s

Founding of STAR Financial Bank

In 1943, Selah G. Wright, Thomas Marcuccilli, Arthur Hodson, and Ralph Marcuccilli, alongside local businessmen, purchased the Upland Branch of Citizens State Bank of Fairmount for $28,000. This marked the foundation of STAR Financial Bank, a community-focused institution that would go on to serve Hoosiers for generations to come.

1950s

Expansion and Second Generation Leadership

The 1950s saw STAR expand with the acquisition of The Gaston Banking Company in 1952. Over the next 15 years, STAR grew by acquiring seven additional community banks. During this period, second-generation leaders Kenny and Bob Wright began their involvement, setting the stage for continued growth and success.

1960s

Formation of NIFSCO and Banking Innovation

In 1966, STAR founded the Northern Indiana Financial Service Corporation (NIFSCO) to navigate restrictive banking laws, which later merged into STAR Financial Bank's charter. The bank also pioneered the use of online banking technology before personal computers existed, demonstrating its commitment to innovation.

1970s

Third Generation Leadership and ATM Network Launch

During the 1970s, second generation leaders Jim and Tom Marcuccilli, as well as third generation leader Tom Wright, began their careers at STAR. The bank also launched its ATM network, MAX (Money Anytime Express), revolutionizing customer convenience by providing 24/7 access to funds, showcasing STAR's focus on technology and customer service.

1980s

Legislative Milestones and Merging of Bank Charters

The 1980s were transformative for STAR. In 1985, Indiana passed the Banking Structure Reform Act, allowing STAR to own multiple banks. Shortly after, STAR merged seven bank charters into one unified entity, all rebranded under the STAR Financial Bank name, simplifying operations and establishing a strong regional identity.

1990s

Digital Transformation and Expansion

In the 1990s, STAR became one of the first banks to transition from analog to digital platforms for checking accounts. This period also saw the bank expand into Kokomo and Tipton in 1994 and become a national pioneer in electronic statement delivery in 1995. STAR unified four bank charters under the STAR Financial Bank brand in 1998.

2000s

Headquarters Move and Continued Growth

In 2000, STAR relocated its corporate headquarters and service center to Fort Wayne to centralize operations and drive further growth. By 2008, STAR had expanded into Indianapolis, opening a Keystone office and acquiring EGL Insurance Agency. The bank also shifted to a specialized business model, creating distinct divisions for different financial services.

2010s

Fourth Generation Leadership and ITM Innovation

The 2010s marked the entry of new leadership into the company, with fourth generation leader Kevin Wright, as well as third generation leaders Kristin Marcuccilli, Mike Wallace, Kate Miller, Thomas Marcuccilli, and Scott Bove joining STAR. In 2015, STAR introduced interactive teller machines (ITMs), later branded as Orbi, further enhancing customer service with real-time, remote banking assistance.

2020s

Continued Expansion and New Headquarters

In 2020, STAR expanded its footprint with a new location at Monument Circle in Indianapolis and a branch at Zionsville High School, focusing on education and community engagement. In 2024, STAR opened a new $45 million headquarters in downtown Fort Wayne, underscoring its commitment to growth and service in Indiana's communities.

Serving Hoosiers Across Indiana

With 37 banking centers strategically located in central and northeast Indiana, STAR Bank is deeply rooted in the communities we serve. Today's STAR Leadership Team

As STAR Bank enters its fourth generation of leadership, we are embracing a new era of innovation and community focus while continuing to honor our tradition of being independently and family-owned. The Marcuccilli and Wright families, alongside other dedicated leaders, bring a wealth of experience and a deep passion for banking and community service. This rare distinction of having a fourth generation carry the torch is a testament to our commitment to Indiana's communities.

This new leadership ensures that STAR Financial Bank is poised to uphold its storied legacy while driving the organization forward with fresh perspectives and a renewed dedication to serving Hoosiers.
